Podcast Guest: Western Grace Podcast

I was honored to be a guest on the Western Grace podcast, hosted by Reba Talbott.

We talked about a lot! From how Reba and I met at a 4-H show in Laramie County when she judged Roslan's class to Wyoming wildlife.

From how our books started to how Roslan became the illustrator to how faith is the root of everything.

We talked about cowboy grit. About devastating hope, and how we want to reach kids.

"Faith is the basis of all of it."

We talked about why we write for kids, and what we want them to walk away knowing.

"I want kids to understand that they are gifted. Every single kid is gifted, no question."

My husband has always kept me grounded about what matters most with these books.

"My husband tells me, honey, if you just help one kid, it's worth it. And we have."

We talked about grit, and what it really means in Western culture.

"That is what the cowboy is. He chooses grit. You're not gifted with grit. You get to have that choice."

And we talked about what hope actually looks like when life gets hard.

"Hope isn't always easy and fluffy and soft and white clouds, like we like to think of it. Hope is hard. Hope is devastating sometimes."

We got into some of those harder things too. We talked about losing Violet last year, about grief, and about how much it matters to show up for someone who is hurting.

"It's ok to talk to kids about hard things."

Read for the Brand isn't just our name. It's our code - the mission, the faith, the culture we're trying to carry forward. This episode is an hour and 25 minutes of exactly that.

"The goal of our books is to keep the Western heritage alive and well."
