Storytime - Rusty Under the Western Skies

Updated December 2025

Read along with Mary Fichtner and her book, Rusty Under the Western Skies.

"Hi, it's Mary and today I wanted to read you our very first book, Rusty Under the Western Skies. It's all about Rusty and his pasture during a storm and the choices he makes. It's still probably my favorite cover with all the beautiful skies, colors. And it's a lot of people's favorite cover storms are an interesting thing, whether it's a literal storm from the weather or a storm in life, a hard thing that we face, or a challenge, we sometimes call a storm.

And sometimes the only control we have over anything in a storm is how we respond to it, the choices that we make. And I feel like Rusty has a lot he can teach us about how to respond to a storm. Also in the book, there's a meadowlark on every page. A meadowlark is our state bird. And a lot of people love the meadowlark for its really unique song that it, that it makes.

So we'll watch for the meadowlark on every page, and we'll watch for the metaphors because storms have a smell and a look and a feel, and we have metaphors in there to represent those things. So let's read and and find out what Rusty decides to do in, in a storm that he's in."
