Last week, I let you know that we would be at the Black Hills Stock Show again this year, and by we, I mean yay my daughter, our illustrator came with me. And she had a lot of original paintings and original charms for necklaces and bracelets that she hand paints. They are just adorable.
And then we had all of our other awesome stuff, our books and our stuffed horses and cowgirl and cowboy dolls.
We were honored to be on The Second Shift show, hosted by Leslie Lane, and in an article in the Rapid City Post!
They described our booth as “filled with watercolor picture books created by Mary Fichtner and Roslan Fichtner, a mother-daughter team bringing deeply personal Western stories to life.”

One of our favorite things, though, is to talk with the kids who love our books.
This year we asked some of them what they love about our books:
Adely from Nebraska : We are here with Adely from Nebraska and she came back for more books this year, and she's gonna tell us what she loves. What's your favorite thing about our books?
“Having them good and I like reading them”
Oh my gosh. And I just have to add her dad says, we're talking hardcover to hardcover, every word has to be read. And I mean, that made our day. I am not gonna lie.
Blainey from South Dakota: I am here with one of my favorite cowgirls Blainey from South Dakota, whose art skills are improving by the minutes. Well, she wrote the book, right? And her sister illustrated it and it rhymes. And I mean, woo. We're gonna have some competition in about a year. I'm thinking so, but Blainey's gonna say what she loves about our books.
“I love the beautiful drawings and the creative writing”
Oh my goodness. Wow. Well, that was, I don't even know what else to say. Thank you, Blainey.
Cerulean from Spearfish: I am here with beautiful Cerulean from Spearfish. She is in love with Goodnight Cowgirl . And what is your favorite thing about this bok? You wanna show us your favorite page? I love that idea. Which one is it? That one that says "Goodnight Sun." Do you like the sunshine? Every day? You do! Thank you, beautiful girl.
Oakley from Belle Fourche: I am here with Oakley, one of my favorite cowgirls from Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and she came back for more books this year. And she's gonna tell you what her favorite book is, or her favorite thing about the books. What are you gonna tell 'em? Why are they your favorite?
“Because, um, they normally are a good reason for me to understand as the, um, beginning. Middle and end, and so that's why I keep picking these books.”
Oh my gosh. Oakley. That was the nicest thing. So well said.
Addie, the spokesperson from a group of South Dakota cowgirls: I'm here with my favorite little group of cowgirls from South Dakota aren't they cute or what? This is Addie. She's the spokesperson. She's even telling us what her favorite book is. Are you holding it? Okay, hold it up. What is that one called? Courage The Cowgirl Way.
And that is the best way to have courage is as a cowgirl.
